Near to the Heart of God (Colossians 2:1-5)

Christ’s Church would be characterized by love

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love . . .   Colossians 2:1–2 (ESV)

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:34–35 (ESV)

Christ’s Church would be grounded in truth

. . . to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:1–3 (ESV)

15 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (ESV)

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
2 Peter 1:3 (ESV)

Christ’s Church would be protected from false teaching

I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. Colossians 2:4 (ESV)

Scott Pace: “The best defense against deception is discipleship.”

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1 (ESV)

Christ’s Church would exhibit an ordered commitment

For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. Colossians 2:5 (ESV)

40 But all things should be done decently and in order.
1 Corinthians 14:40 (ESV)

Ephesians 6:10–11 (ESV)

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 1 Peter 5:8–9 (ESV)

13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13 (ESV)
