The Example of Unbelieving Israel and Idolatry

1 Corinthians 10:1-10

1. The privileges of unbelieving Israel
1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 (ESV)

22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground . . . 24 And in the morning watch the LORD in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, Exodus 14:22-24 (ESV)

4 “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. Deuteronomy 32:4 (ESV)

2. The punishment for unbelieving Israel
5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
1 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)

3. The pattern of unbelieving Israel
6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did . . .
11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 1 Corinthians 10:6; 11 (ESV)

4. The perversion of unbelieving Israel
7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 1 Corinthians 10:7-10 (ESV)

6 And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. Exodus 32:6 (ESV)

2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?” Exodus 17:2 (ESV)

14 But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert; Psalm 106:14 (ESV)

1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1 (ESV)

17 Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. Philippians 3:17 (NASB)
